How do I choose the household appliances for my kitchen and how do I place them in the room?

Choosing a kitchen appliance is one of the most important decisions when decorating this room. Which equipment to choose? What should I look at? Where do you put them?

Free-standing household appliances

One of the possible solutions is to buy free-standing household appliances. It's a good choice when you're looking for a low price and the possibility of replacing your household appliances without the need to interfere with kitchen cabinets. Free-standing appliances have, with the rest, many more advantages: they are inexpensive, functional, roomy, easy to assemble and disassemble, and often decorate the kitchen because they have a very carefully designed design.

If you decide to buy a freestanding household, you can set it up very freely - the limitation is the existing connections and your kitchen furniture.

built-in household appliances

Built-in appliances are becoming increasingly popular because they can be almost completely hidden in the kitchen. The built-in fridge or dishwasher becomes practically invisible, as they are completely hidden in the cabinet and crowned with a kitchen front.

It is discretion that makes built-in devices so popular, but it is also important that they are functional and comfortable to use. The growing choice of such devices is also not without significance.

How to choose a fridge, hob and oven?

The purchase of each of these devices is quite an expense, so it is worth to reach for well thought-out and good solutions. To make a good choice, you need to think about the following:

  • Do we prefer free-standing or built-in devices?

This decision will narrow down the available pool of equipment to those that meet this criterion. If you are planning a major kitchen renovation and furniture replacement, consider buying built-in household appliances. If we just want to replace a broken fridge with a new model, we should use the same type of appliance as we had to avoid major alterations in the kitchen.

  • Should the fridge have a freezer at the bottom or at the top?

Top-freezer refrigerators, especially single-door models, are slightly less functional than those with a separate freezer at the bottom. Especially popular are built-in fridges with a freezer at the bottom, which can be built in with two independent furniture fronts. The freezer at the bottom is comfortable to use (it is used less often than the fridge) and has spacious drawers.

  • Do we prefer an oven with a combined oven or a built-in appliance?

This is an issue that needs to be considered, because it has a significant impact on the appearance of the entire kitchen. The oven with hob is one free-standing appliance that can be placed next to the kitchen cabinets. The oven and the separate cooktop are built-in solutions that can be built up classically (one above the other) or completely independently, creating great possibilities for room design.

  • What kind of cooktop or cooker do you want to buy?

Once we decide whether we prefer a free-standing stove or oven and a built-in hob, we should focus on the type of such a hob or stove.

Gas hobs are only suitable for kitchens with a gas installation. Gas hobs are valued because they are independent of electricity. If there are interruptions in the electricity supply in our area and we have the possibility to connect a cooker or gas hob, it is worth to decide on this solution.

Electric and induction hobs are a more modern solution that can be used wherever it is not possible to connect to the gas system. Electric and induction stoves and hobs allow for quick preparation of meals, do not emit flame, they can be placed slightly closer to the window, because there is no risk of flame blowout.

Issues to be considered when buying kitchen appliances

The decision whether to choose built-in or free-standing equipment is only the beginning of success. It is equally important to pay attention to technical details such as:

  • Noise emitted - each household appliance emits specific sounds during use. This applies largely to hoods, dishwashers and refrigerators. It is worth paying attention to this issue so that it does not turn out that a too loud refrigerator makes it difficult for us to sleep at night. This parameter is expressed in decibels (dB) and the lower it is, the quieter the device operates.
  • Functionality - regardless of whether you choose a fridge, dishwasher or oven, you should make sure that the functionality of these devices will meet your expectations. If we care about the function of an ice cube in the fridge, let's focus on those models that offer it, and if we're looking for an oven with a steam function, let's reject those devices that don't offer it.
  • Energy class - each household appliance is assigned an energy class. The higher, the better, because the power consumption will be lower. This is particularly important for household appliances that are used frequently or continuously (such as refrigerators).
  • Price - it is worth to establish the available budget at the outset, so as not to unnecessarily browse through offers with devices that are many times higher than the assumed price.
  • Brand - it is worth to choose devices of renowned manufacturers, which enjoy good reputation among users.

Where do you set up your household appliances in the kitchen?

The specific layout of household appliances should depend on the preferences of the household members and the layout of the room, but there are a few rules to follow:

  • The cooker and built-in gas hob should not be located directly under or next to the window - there is a risk that the flame will blow out, as well as curtains or curtains will catch fire.
  • The distance between the hood and the stove or hob should depend on the type of stove. If it is a gas hob, it should be a minimum of 70 centimetres, and if it is an induction or electric hob, the hood can already be hung 60 centimetres above it.
  • The fridge should be located far away from heat sources that will adversely affect its efficiency. These include in particular radiators, but also an oven and a window with southern or western exposure.

It's quite a challenge to choose the kitchen appliances, but if we focus on some of the most important issues, the shopping should be fruitful. The same goes for the layout of kitchen appliances - all you have to do is follow the same ergonomic and some of the most important safety rules to achieve a comfortable end result.
